STINT Internationalisation Index indicates how international the universities in Sweden are. This year three universities are in the top category of internationalisation. Last year’s prize winner Stockholm School of Economics is now accompanied by Chalmers and KTH.

In times when the value of openness and international collaboration is questioned, internationalisation of research and higher education becomes even more important. STINT has developed an Internationalisation Index to measure the degree of internationalisation at the universities in Sweden. It describes the development for six key aspects within internationalisation of research, education, faculty and the management. The aim of this index is to support the universities in their ongoing work with internationalisation.

We are very pleased to have three universities in the top category. Hopefully this development will continue. If so, we will have many higher education institutions with the highest grade in a few years, says Andreas Göthenberg, STINT´s Executive Director.

When STINT launched the index in 2016, there was only one university in the top category. Already then, it was clear that the most international universities were the large and profiled ones. The younger and smaller universities are not as internationalised as the larger ones, even though there are exceptions, which confirm that it is possible with the right efforts.

Today there is an ongoing government commission developing an internationalisation strategy for research and higher education in Sweden. This confirms that internationalisation is a valuable tool for the development of the universities. International universities also contribute to an inflow and exchange of ideas, knowledge, and networks, which strengthens the competitiveness of the heavily export-dependent Swedish economy.
