On 20 February 2023, STINT organised a session at the annual conference of the Association of International Education Administrators (AIEA) in Washington, DC. The session was themed “Risk Analyses for New Academic Partnerships in an Increasingly Complex World.”

The session was opened by STINT’s Executive Director, Dr Andreas Göthenberg, who spoke on internationalisation in an increasing complex world. This was followed by presentations by Dr Tommy Shih, Senior Adviser on responsible internationalisation at STINT, who described STINT’s efforts to promote responsible internationalisation. Next Prof. Stefan Östlund, Vice President for global relations at KTH Royal Institute of Technology, discussed the need for risk analysis. Dr Erik Forsberg, STINT’s representative in APAC, exemplified how a risk analysis is conducted while Prof. William I Brustein, Acting Director of the Global Studies Center at the University of Pittsburgh, talked on the topic “Risk Analysis – Too Much or Too Little?”

STINT’s session in Washington garnered great interest, with 80 participants and a lively discussion at the end. The audience’s active participation confirms the importance and timeliness of responsible internationalisation. The discussion for example covered what the academic sector itself can do in the current hyper-politicised global landscape.

During the week, STINT also has follow-up meetings on responsible internationalisation with the National Science Foundation (NSF), the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) as well as Harvard University.
