<\/a>The global research landscape has undergone dramatic changes during the last decade. The leading research universities are no longer concentrated to a few western countries \u2013 new actors have emerged with remarkable speed and scope.<\/p>\nOne country is more prominent than all the others: China is now home to some of the world\u2019s most influential research universities and produces highly cited research across a broad spectrum of areas. This transformation has far-reaching consequences for international research collaborations and raises new questions for policymakers, funders, and universities around the world.<\/p>\n
STINT Outlook #4 examines the world\u2019s leading research universities from multiple perspectives, including the CWTS Leiden Ranking and Nature Index. The report shows how Chinese universities have joined \u2013 and in some cases surpassed \u2013 the long-dominant research institutions of the USA and Europe.<\/p>\n
