STINT is launching a new report format, Academic internationalisation outlook, in which shorter thematic articles will highlight current issues relevant to the internationalisation of research and higher education.<\/strong><\/p>\n This first number focuses on China\u2019s data protection legislation and its impact on academic partnerships with researchers and institutions in the country. In recent years China has introduced a body of legislation on data protection and the processing of personal data. Consequently, researchers and higher education institutions have been concerned about the impact of such legislation on research collaborations generally, and data transfer particularly. In March 2024, the Cyberspace Administration of China released new provisions regarding the export of data which in practice amount to eased regulation of outbound data transfer in many cases, and specifically in the case of data generated from research collaborations.<\/p>\n
