In the current geopolitical environment, international scientific engagement is no longer primarily determined by either cooperation agreements between countries or the interests of individual researchers. It increasingly requires adequate institutional framing, different interactions between the state and academia (in terms of both content and form), and conducive, complementary support from funders and intermediary organisations.
This STINT Forum gathers STINT’s international cross-sectorial Advisory Board to offer perspective on how universities, research institutions, and research funders may navigate the changing intersections between science, geopolitics, technology, and society, and how governments and intermediary organisations may support them.
Building on this perspective, three interlinked issues are emphasised:
- What might an appropriate institutional response to the new geopolitical era look like, and how should such a response be designed?
- How could the relationship between the state and academia evolve to respond to the changed context?
- How could such institutional and relational changes be achieved and facilitated, and what role may be played by intermediary organisations?
The Advisory Board’s recent Academic Internationalisation Brief, which is a new report format from STINT, will also be presented at the STINT Forum on 3 September.
