STINT’s efforts to promote responsible internationalisation began in 2018 and have since gained widespread recognition internationally. In Sweden we funded the establishment of two research groups on responsible internationalisation: the Forum for Responsible Internationalisation and Research Security (RISEC) at KTH Royal Institute of Technology and the Centre for Advanced Research in Responsible Internationalisation (CARRI) at Linköping University.
These initiatives, as well as the government’s recent publication of national guidelines for responsible internationalisation, lead us to conclude that the work we embarked upon has been successful and may therefore be left in the capable hands of higher education institutions and government actors. STINT has used this approach ever since its establishment in 1994 – we quickly take new initiatives and then pass the baton to other actors when they have shown good results and need to be scaled up.
As an independent agent of change in the knowledge system, STINT must identify and focus on new initiatives to contribute to the continued strategic internationalisation of Swedish higher education institutions. Our focus will therefore increasingly be on Science Intelligence, on-site trend analysis abroad, www.science-intelligence.org. We have a growing overseas team, with at present five staff members with doctorates located in China and ASEAN (Dr Erik Forsberg), Japan and South Korea (Dr Laura Barbieri), Africa (Dr Nelson Torto), South America (Dr Jacob Silva Paulsen), and North America (Dr Niklas Kviselius). This initiative will be strengthened by further expansion globally. Through this work STINT contributes to expert analysis and strategic relationship building, which create contextual knowledge, for instance in the form of regular reports on scientific developments in the wider world.
