JSPS Postdoctoral Fellowship Program (Short-term) for North American and European Researchers (Gaikokujin Tokubetsu Kenkyuin (Obei-Tanki)) 2012-2013
The JSPS Fellowship for Foreign Researchers aims at providing selected foreign researchers, from among other countries Sweden, with opportunities to pursue collaborative research with corresponding Japanese researchers at Japanese universities. The short-term program is especially established to enable shorter stays for post-doctoral as well as pre-doctoral researchers.

The Swedish Foundation for International Cooperation in Research and Higher Education, STINT, awards postdoc-scholarship for 1 to 12 months stay in Japan for research in all fields of the humanities, social sciences and natural sciences. Costs for travel and maintenance are covered by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS). This scholarship is announced once a year.
Duration and commencement of fellowship
Fellowships are awarded for a period of 1 to 12 months. The fellowship must commence before 31 March 2013.
JSPS provides each Fellow with the following support:
- A round-trip air ticket
- A monthly maintenance stipend of: (a) For Ph.D. holders: 362,000 yen (b) For non-Ph.D. holders: 200,000 yen
- A settling-in allowance of 200,000 yen (only for Fellows with a tenure of four or more months)
- Overseas travel accident and sickness insurance coverage
Fellows must conduct their research at a university or research institution that is eligible to apply to the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) for funding under the Grants-in-Aid for Scientific-Research Program and approved by JSPS as an appropriate institution for hosting young foreign researchers.
Eligibility
Candidates for the fellowship must:
- be affiliated to a Swedish university and resident in Sweden.
- have obtained their doctoral degree at a university outside Japan within six years of the date the fellowship goes into effect, or must be currently enrolled in a doctoral course at a university in Sweden and scheduled to receive their Ph.D. within two years.
- make prior arrangements with Japanese host researchers.
Selection criteria
The following criteria guide the selection of candidates:
- The fellowship should help advance both the candidate’s and the host’s research work
- The host and candidate must have established close communication and devised a concrete research plan
- The implementation of the fellowship should contribute to promoting exchange and collaboration within higher education and research between Sweden and Japan.
Application
The application must reach STINT no later than March 27, 2012. The specific form must be completed and sent per e-mail to the address below. Within a week after the deadline, the first page of the form shall be printed and signed by the applicant and mailed to:

NOTE! All documents including enclosures must be in English. When the original document is in another language, please be sure to attach an English translation (which does not need to be an official translation, but may be done by the host or candidate).
Supplementary material submitted separately or incomplete applications will not be considered. Fellows who have previously been awarded scholarship for more than 12 months stay by the JSPS are not awarded again.
Allocation of scholarships
Applications will be examined by STINT and JSPS and the results will be communicated in August 2012 or earlier. The fellowship must commence before 31 March 2013.
