Fostering cooperation with China

Scientific contacts, cooperation and exchange with the academic community in China are important factors for future relations.
The Swedish School of Advanced Asia Pasific Studies, an academic network programme, set up in the year 2000 by STINT and RJ, the Bank of Sweden Tercentenary Foundation has developed into one important tool for new contacts.
In order to widen the contacts further, STINT has lately initiated a new scholarship programme for students attending two-year international master’s programmes at Swedish universities, the STINT Scholarships for Academic Excellence Programme. The purpose of the programme is to attract excellent students from eminent universities . STINT has invited a limited number of foreign universities to nominate candidates to the programme, among them Peking University and Tsinghua University in China.
The STINT Foundation, the German Marshall Fund of the United States, the Bank of Sweden Tercentenary Foundation and the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs have agreed to establish the Stockholm China Forum.
The Forum, which will run biannually, aims to establish a deep and systematic transatlantic dialogue about and with China on the impact of its rapid development as a global actor. This new initiative will bring together policymakers, academics and intellectuals, journalists, and business people, drawing both on China experts and on the broader policy community.
The Stockholm China Forum is coordinated by Andrew Small at the GMF Brussels office and Thommy Svensson, coordinator of the Swedish School of Advanced Asia Pacific Studies.
The first Stockholm China Forum took place in mid-March 2007.
