Questions about Institutional Grants for Younger Researchers

For whom is the programme intended?

The programme is aimed at researchers who have completed their PhD not more than seven years before the deadline for applications.

Why not more than seven years?

STINT wants to support newly established researchers to form their own international networks and collaborations.

What happens if the project leader needs to take parental leave?

Contact STINT. The project time may be extended corresponding to the duration of the parental leave.

If I’ve been on parental leave since completing my PhD, may an equal length of time be disregarded from the years that have passed since my time of dissertation?

Yes, state in your application that you have been on parental leave and during what period.

If I change employer during the time of the project may I bring the grant with me to the new institution?

Yes, if the new institution is in Sweden and after having conferred with STINT.

What do you mean by Main foreign partner?

The Main foreign partner shares the responsibility for the project, whereas a potential second foreign partner may be used to broaden or add to the scientific potential.

What do you mean by already established collaborations?

If the participating partners already have been granted funding for the collaboration or have several joint publications on the intended research topic it is defined as an already established collaboration.

What do you mean by development potential?

It means that the collaboration shall have a focus on establishing lasting international networks and thus provide for a variety of activities after the project period has ended, e.g. new projects or course development.

Why can I only be granted funds through this program once?

Institutional Grants for Younger Researchers focus on providing new opportunities for researchers at an early stage of establishing their international networks. Having been granted funds once, you would be in a position to compete within the Institutional Grants Programme for a new collaboration.

Why is it not possible to apply to both Institutional Grants for Younger Researchers and Institutional Grants programme during the same year?

In our experience it is a significant advantage to focus on one collaboration at a time.

What does the grant cover?

The grant covers the costs arising with exchange visits (travel, housing, per diem) but may also be used for seminars and other activities in the cooperation. A small percentage of the grant may - after consultation with STINT and with our specific permission - be used to cover additional costs that are directly associated with exchange (laboratory costs etc.). The grants may not be used to pay salaries at the home department or for the purchase of scientific equipment, including computers.

When will I receive the grant?

STINT will set up a contract with the Main applicant and the Main applicant´s department at a Swedish institution of higher education. Grants will be paid to the department. Payments will be made twice a year.

If there is money left within the project after three years, may we extend the project time?

Depending on the circumstances STINT may grant an extension.

May the project include the exchange of PhD students for longer periods?

Yes, the project should involve persons on different levels, e.g. students, PhD candidates, postdoctoral researchers and university teachers. It is important that the exchange isn’t limited to a few individuals or to particular categories of researchers or academic staff.

Is it possible for the Main foreign partner to have completed their PhD more than seven years ago?

Yes, but STINT encourages that the Main foreign partner is in a similar position in their academic career as the Main applicant.
